Studio I

ARCS 1105 First Year Design Studio

Azrieli School of Architecture & Urbanism, Carleton University

Studio I explores the fundamental principles governing the natural and manmade environment. A central idea underlying this inquiry concerns the reciprocal relationship between the world of phenomena (and its embodiment within us) and the things we choose to make. Students are challenged to creatively investigate, interpret and respond to the ideas and meanings expressed in the work of an assigned artist. Emphasis is placed on the search for the inherent principals concealed within phenomena and material/matter, together with their informative and trans-formative potential.

The architectural idea derived from the artist analysis and developed through drawing and material explorations culminates in a proposal for a pavilion with a specific program and site. Many of my students’ projects can be viewed at MakingSpaceAndPlace.com.
